Nepal, the Himalayan Kingdom, is a small country generously endowed with natural beauty and ethnic and cultural variety. But it also ranks among the poorest and least developed countries in the world, and many remote villages have no access to safe drinking water, basic health services or education. The situation for women and children is particularly desperate, and maternal and infant mortality are among the highest in the world. Moreover, in the last 9 years, Nepal has been suffering from the impact of a Maoist insurgency affecting the whole country, and in consequence development activities have all but come to a standstill, in some instances even been reversed. Despite these adverse conditions, the majority of villagers in Nepal are neither passive nor frustrated: Most will eagerly take up any opportunity to improve their community’s and especially their children’s situation in life, and often their initiative is only hampered by the lack of material base or technical knowledge.
This is why, in a time where many large organisations are reducing their programmes in Nepal, we have founded a new charity, specifically to help and support those communities in Nepal’s remote rural areas.
