About PHASE
PHASE Worldwide - Practical Help Achieving Self Empowerment
PHASE Worldwide and its Nepalese partners work towards improving the lives of some of the poorest and most disadvantaged groups in the world: the inhabitants of remote Himalayan villages. These are communities with no access to basic services like healthcare and education or even any road transport. PHASE particularly aims to work with the most vulnerable within these communities: women, children, low castes, the very poor and people with disabilities.

PHASE has been registered with the Charity Commission since September 2005, and since then has grown very quickly: exceeding anticipated outcomes, initiating a proliferation of successful and sustainable projects and generating a huge number of success stories. We currently support programmes in eight communities, and also support a technical cooperation to prevent cervical cancer in Nepal.
The ethos of PHASE is in the name - the ultimate goal of all PHASE’s work is the self-empowerment of poor communities. The support that PHASE provides - health, education, and income generation - are the basic services that communities need in order for them to lift themselves out of poverty in an appropriate and sustainable way.
Why is the PHASE approach special?
- Needs-based:
We select projects on basis of highest need and we conduct detailed pre-project needs assessment and ongoing evaluation
- Integrated:
Our projects address problems in three interlinked sectors: education, health and poverty reduction
- Locally led:
The project planning and implementation is led by Nepalese professionals with a vision for their country, and the projects offer local qualified staff opportunities for their personal development while contributing to national development
There is strong involvement of local communities in planning and delivering projects
- Sustainable:
PHASE aims to support communities to a level where they become self-sufficient, enabling the organisation to withdraw to focus on another area
- Small yet professional:
Although PHASE is a small organisation, we take into account national and international development policies and experiences.
Our small size also means that our project delivery is direct and efficient
- Cost effective:
PHASE has very low administrative costs. So far, much less than 10 % of our total budget has gone into administrative work, and almost all of these costs have been incurred in Nepal.
- Personal:
Strong partnership links between the UK and Nepal mean that communication works well, without creating dependency
PHASE is also characterised by its family atmosphere in fundraising events and the direct involvement of local young people (the PHASElets!) Everyone can get involved, and we also offer the opportunity for supporters to visit PHASE projects in Nepal.
