July 2009: Crisis in Humla

The most remote PHASE health project areas, Maila and Melcham in Humla district, the far West of Nepal, are currently experiencing an epidemic of diarrhoea - possibly cholera.

On just one day, 35 cases of dehydration and diarrhoea presented in Maila, many of them children, and at least 5 needing iv rehydration. At least 250 people have died of Cholera in the Far West this season so far. Our health workers are essential in preventing deaths from these basically treatable conditions.

The Humla projects have so far been funded by an Irish charity which sees itself unable to continue the funding at previous levels.

Consequently, over 10,000 people in one of the remotest and poorest areas of Nepal may find themselves without any healthcare again.  PHASE Nepal staff have been providing services in two locations, seeing about 20,000 patients in total and attending 50 home deliveries over the period of a year.

They have been saving lives on a regular basis, by treating common problems like pneumonia in children and severe dehydration form diarrhoea.

Each of the two health projects costs PHASE about 10,000 pounds a year to run.

June 2009: Visit by PHASE Nepal Executive Director to UK

In May/June 2009, Jiban Karki, Executive Director of PHASE Nepal, visited the UK, to find out more about a possible cooperation with the ABLE partnership/ Green Business Network:

This is a social enterprise partnership in South Yorkshire, with an emphasis on recycling, sustainable farming and fish farming. We are hoping that fish farming will be a valuable new aspect in our income generation projects in Nepal.
